WHAT IS WATSU®?
WATSU® was created in the early 1980’s in California and then expanded into Europe and beyond. Resting back in the arms of the practitioner, clients are floated, stretched, cradled, massaged and moved through warm water (34.5°C/95°F). This embodied experience of safe movement and touch prepares for and amplifies the benefits of traditional physical therapies.
The way the nervous system responds to illness, injury, pain and chronic conditions is a key aspect of managing wellness and recovery. During a WATSU session, the nervous system relaxes as the body yields to the support of warm water. Through softening and stretching the body builds its capacity to repattern.
WATSU is designed to create deep relaxation by mobilising joints and myofascial structures, and addressing neuro-messaging pathways that respond to stretch and tactile pressure.
The WATSU practitioner floats the client throughout the session by moving their supine body through slow, circular sequences of movement. Floats are used around the thighs to facilitate optimal alignment, buoyancy, comfort and relaxation.
Taking weight off the vertebrae and joints allows for gentle, gradual, water-led stretching that relieves pressure on the neural pathways throughout the spine, joints and organs.
Cultivating movement with breath in a seamless and continuous way develops capacity in the client and therapist to fully explore range, mobility, dynamic stretch and stillness. This creates optimal conditions for the body to repair and balance. Contributing aspects include:
- Hydrostatic pressure while submerged helps with blood flow and lymphatic return, contributing to reduced swelling and improved cardiovascular function.
- The thermal effects of warm water help soothe pain and stiffness, especially in chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.
- The rhythmic, flowing movements help muscles relax, and reduce spasticity and high muscle tone.
- The somatic mind-body layer which promotes deep relaxation and meditative states that support cognitive and emotional release.
The opening moves of WATSU are gentle and slow. Dynamic moves explore range, mobility and stretch. Closing moves bring the client into a space of completion and increased connection to self. The moves and sequence are adaptable for each client.
WATSU has been incorporated into aquatic therapy treatment programs in hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centres around the world. Some of the populations benefitting are those with arthritis, strokes, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, spondylitis, Parkinson's Disease, cerebral palsy, post surgery, traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress.
CONNECTION WITH HYDROTHERAPY
Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water to treat various physical conditions. WATSU shares many principles and benefits with hydrotherapy such as:
- Warm water (usually 34.5°C/95°F): WATSU sessions are done in warm pools, which helps muscles relax, improves circulation, and reduces pain—core aspects of hydrotherapy.
- Buoyancy: The water supports the body, reducing pressure on joints and the spine, allowing for gentle, pain-free movement
- Hydrostatic pressure: Being submerged helps with blood flow and lymphatic return, contributing to reduced swelling and improved cardiovascular function.
- Thermal effects: Just like in hydrotherapy, the warm water in Watsu can soothe pain and stiffness, especially in chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.
CONNECTION WITH PHYSIOTHERAPY
Physiotherapy (or physical therapy) focuses on restoring movement and function after injury or illness. WATSU intersects with physiotherapy in these ways:
- Passive movement and stretching: The practitioner gently moves the client through a series of stretches and joint mobilizations, which mimic manual therapy techniques used in physiotherapy.
- Neuromuscular re-education: WATSU can help re-pattern movement, especially for clients with neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s), by offering a safe and supported environment.
- Muscle relaxation and tone regulation: The rhythmic, flowing movements can help reduce spasticity or high muscle tone—common goals in neurophysiotherapy.
- Pain management: Like physiotherapy, Watsu can reduce chronic pain and improve quality of life in people with musculoskeletal or neurological issues.
What makes WATSU distinct is the emotional and energetic component—it often promotes deep relaxation, meditative states, and emotional release. While hydrotherapy and physiotherapy are more clinical or rehabilitative, WATSU adds a mind-body layer.
OTHER SIMILAR WATER THERAPIES
WATSU has inspired many other similar water therapies such as:
WaterDance (Wassertanzen): A dynamic, flowing form of aquatic therapy involving underwater movement.
Fluid Presence: A somatic, presence-centered aquatic practice integrating movement, dance, and mindfulness.
Aquatic Integration: Combines elements of Watsu, craniosacral therapy, and osteopathy in water.
Jahara Technique: A method focusing on spinal alignment and postural awareness in water.
Healing Dance: a therapeutic movement practice that integrates fluid motion, breath, and presence.
Water Wisdom Therapy is an eco-somatic practice in which the therapist works with the unique conditions of the client to bring them into a relational space of healing in warm water. It’s a softening experience that leans into the power of movement and touch. It integrates WATSU and other forms of water therapy such as WaterDance, Fluid Presence and Aquatic Integration with somatic practices such as Body Mind Centering and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. In a Water Wisdom session healing change emerges from developing trust, letting go, feeling connection, clarity and flow. Sessions can happen in water or on land.
Healing is in the co-creative flow.
